Founding Notes
By David Roach
During my last year at Morehouse College, in my Urban Economic Public Policy Class, I was required to write a paper on "Solutions for economic development for the African American community," by the head of Morehouse Colleges Business Department, Dr. William Sheftal.
From this assignment, my years of teaching, and reading these books and others, Up From Slavery, by Booker T. Washington, Where Do We Go From Here, Chaos or Community, by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., The Destruction of Black Civilization by Chancellor Williams, Stolen Legacy, by George James, My Experiments with Truth, by Mohandas Gandhi, The Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey by Marcus Garvey, To Die For the People, by Huey P. Newton, I was motivated to add my beliefs to the discussion of "what could work today, to improve our communities," but even more inspired, to prove it.
Over the last few years, on behalf of The Familyhood Connection Inc, I have focused most of my attention on bringing different aspects of our programs to two main high schools in Oakland- McClymonds High School in West Oakland, and Castlemont High School in East Oakland.
I use to teach at both schools and already had relationships there. However, we chose these schools because they are located in what many people consider as the high crime, high risk areas of Oakland.
