Every year, African Americans lose
between 500,000 - 900,000 acres. In 1910, African Americans owned
around 15 million acres. Currently, African Americans own between 2
million acres and 8 million acres (if you include heir property which many
of us just pay taxes on). In 1910, there were roughly 54,000 Black
farmers in the United States. Today, there are around 18,000 African
American farmers in the U.S (mostly in the Southern states of the U.S).

As a founding member of the
group FAM, which happens to be short for “family”, but really means
“Friend's, Alumni of McClymond’s High School. The Familyhood
Connection's Healthy Economics campaign seeks to connect the alumni of
Historical Black Colleges and Universities to the alumni of McClymond's high
school. But also, create a model for HBCU's partner with high
schools (middle, elementary school's, etc) to benefit the communities, which
we live.
As the recent nominated,
Morehouse College Bay Area Mentor Chair, I welcome all Historical Black
Colleges and Universities to participate, by contacting me, and collectively
adopting the high schools that need our assistance first.
The Healthy
Economics Campaign seeks to utilize the schools to develop Intergenerational
Enterprise’s that re- connect agriculture to the schools, and the
communities in which they serve.
FAM is hosting the 1st Flash Back Day Friday, October 2nd
, 2006 at McClymond’s to bring alumni back to the high school, to tour, and
develop mentorship for the students at McClymond's |
Agriculture
is the root of culture
Hotep
Hotep is right! Agriculture is the root of
culture. How does a community function without having a food source? How do
a people live without utilizing or owning land? IN CHAOS, is the
answer. We are witnessing this throughout the world, especially in
communities of color.
Malcolm X said, “Education
is the passport to future, for those who prepare today, will lead to
tomorrow.”
During those days,
integration had not kicked in, but Malcolm X predicted the loss of business
ownership in our communities, once the gates of capitalism were able to
fully enter.
The Healthy Economics
Campaign seeks to analyze deeper the above statement made by Malcolm X in
search of preparing today for leadership in the future.
Many might interpret this
statement to mean,” go to college, get an education, and get a good job.”
However, the Healthy Economics Campaign seeks to discuss the a few
additional roles schools should have in our communities.
In this case, I care not to discus the role they currently have in our
communities. There is enough data, describing the problems, but rarely any
discussion on possible solutions.
The Recipe
1) Expand the role of
educational institutions, in every community, to connect with schools of
higher learning (colleges).
2) Add Mo’ African culture (intergenerational activities + griot programs).
