ABOUT MO' BETTER FOOD

In 1996, The Familyhood Connection Inc, a 501 c-3, a non- profit corporation, held the Mo' Better Food Conference in San Francisco.

The official title of the conference was, The Mo' Better Food Conference, Who will supply healthy food for the African- American community?

Of course, we thought the typical answer would be African- American farmers!

We knew African- American farmers made up less than 1% in the State of California. However, we had no idea, who our farmers were? Where they lived? What they grew?

The purpose of the Mo' Better Food conference was to ask those in attendance the above questions with the intent of gaining the input of the community to answer the above questions.

We realized, most of the grocery stores in our neighborhood had been converted into liquor stores. Thus, making it extremely difficult for local residents to find fresh fruits and vegetables.

ABOUT THE FAMILYHOOD CONNECTION

The mission the Familyhood Connection is to promote programs that bring the generations together to develop self –sufficiency in low-income communities.

The Familyhood Connection was founded in 1994 by co-founders David Roach, Bryan Phillips, and Tony Dorsett.

The Mo’ Better Food Farmers Market historically has been a certified farmers market in West Oakland since 1998.

The Mo’ Better Food Market has provided an outlet for African- American farmers (who are less than 1% of all farmers in the state of California) to sell their produce, while increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in West Oakland.

West Oakland, like many urban communities, have been defined as a food insecure community. Which means, the community as a whole has little access to fresh fruits and vegetables for its own consumption.

HEAs the director of the Business academy at McClymonds High School, David Roach incorporated the Mo’ Better Food Farmers Market to function as a school - based enterprise.

The curriculum for the school- based enterprise consisted of students learning business, technology, and health by managing the Mo' Better Food Farmers market.

Since, the average age of African American farmers is close to 70 Years, our future food supply will depend on training youth and young adults to join them.

Dr. George Washington Carver, once said, “every school should have a garden…it teaches the child how to think.”

Part of the Mo’ Better Food Program, is to create school gardens and increase commerce in low- income communities, by increasing the participation of local residents into the food industry.

The Intergenerational Enterprise is a community building strategy model which stems from alumni of the high school, and its students, working together to build businesses and organizations in the community.

The Intergenerational Enterprise seeks to increase the participation of college graduates in local high schools by recruiting graduates from Historical Black Colleges and Universities to participate as advisors for high school run social enterprises.

The Intergenerational Enterprise comprises of students, adults, and seniors, who work together within their community to create social enterprises.
